We are still in Meadows of Dan, it is still Friday.  This next stop in our tour is pretty special, and I didn't want it buried at the bottom of the previous post.

God's country

Not many miles north of Meadows of Dan is the small town of Floyd, population 449. This small remote town is on The Crooked Road, Virginia’s 333 mile Heritage Music Trail, whose mission is to highlight Southwest Virginia by promoting this region’s rich heritage of traditional music. Floyd has also become known as an artist colony, with several fine art studios and potteries.

The Floyd Country Store sits right downtown and seems to be the nucleus of the music scene. You can’t buy beans or potatoes at the store; their main product is music. They have several different musical offerings during the week, but the Friday Night Jamboree, which features local and area bands, is the main event. The store has a stage, limited seating and a hardwood dance floor. They offer reserved and open seating as well as standing room only, I estimate the capacity is limited to about 200 people. They have a very small food counter, penny candy and Tillimook Ice cream.

Gospel hour

The Friday Night Jamboree starts with an hour of Gospel music by local musicians, the audience reverently remains seated during this part of the evening, this is the south and they have not abandoned their faith.

A different band takes the stage for the country music session. The audience swarms the dance floor and soon you can see and feel how much this town has embraced the music scene here. The dancers encompass every level of society, young, old, and everything in between. They mostly do country flat foot dancing, if you’re from Philly, think the Bristol Stomp. The other dance that they do they call the Two Step, but it’s not the Texas two Step.

At the intermission, they bring out a band of young people, this one was three young ladies about 12-13 years old. They are students at a non-profit music academy here in Floyd. The purpose of it is to continue the music legacy here.

In addition to the indoor stage performances and dancing other musicians gather for jam sessions on the benches lining the street outside the country store.

We were profoundly impressed with the theater and with the people. Never have we experienced such a pleasant group of people from all walks of life enjoying themselves. Floyd will definitely be on future trips through this area.

PS: Not once during our time in town did we see anyone with their face stuck in their cellphone. In the ice cream shop, which was full of young folks, I did see a couple cell phones stuck in back pockets, but never saw anyone using them. That alone should tell you how different this town is.
